Diana Taurasi Reportedly Tests Positive for Banned Stimulant in Turkey

dui_diana_taurasiDiana Taurasi Reportedly Tests Positive for Banned Stimulant in Turkey:Diana Taurasi, the WNBA standout and former UConn All-American, reportedly has tested positive for a mild stimulant while playing in a professional league in Turkey.

Taurasi's lawyer, Howard Jacobs, told The Associated Press Taurasi was provisionally suspended from the Turkish league after her "A" sample came back positive. She has requested a test of her "B" sample.

Jacobs wouldn't identify the stimulant to the AP other than to say it "was not a steroid or recreational drug."

Taurasi has missed the last three games for the well-known Turkish club Fenerbahce.

"While she is fully cooperating with authorities, there are serious doubts about the accuracy of the test results," Jacobs said in a statement to the AP. "We are confident that Diana will be fully vindicated once all the evidence is reviewed. She regrets that someone has violated the confidentiality rules of this process and will make no further statement at this time."

The 28-year-old led the WNBA with 22.6 points per game last season, good for her third consecutive league scoring title. She was the top overall pick in the 2004 draft by the Phoenix Mercury.

Taurasi was suspended for two WNBA games in 2009 after pleading guilty to a DUI charge.

skype|Skype Down for Millions of Users

skypeSkype|Skype Down for Millions of Users:Internet telephone service Skype left millions of users out in the cold Wednesday, as a problem with its connection system prevented people from signing in.

Bloomberg News

The number of users on the service, which spun off from eBay last year, began falling earlier today — something that isn’t “typical or expected,” the company said in an official blog post. Technology blog ReadWriteWeb said the drop was significant: Numbers went from about 21 million to about 10 million.

Skype engineers are working on the problem, the company said. But the fix may take “a few hours,” and advanced features like video calling might not be available until after that.

Downtime is a potentially huge problem for Internet services like Skype, which have made an effort to convince users that they’re as stable as traditional carriers. The service is known for being relatively reliable, with its last major outage in August 2007, reported Digits colleague Ben Rooney at Tech Europe.

So what went wrong? The company says the problem has to do with its “supernodes” — a crucial part of its peer-to-peer networking system. Almost any computer in the network can be a Skype supernode, and these act like directories for the service, telling Skype things like who is online. Skype says a problem with some versions of Skype took a bunch of supernodes down, meaning that people weren’t able to log on as normal.

Larry Brown Resigns as Bobcats Coach, Paul Silas Named Interim Coach|Bio|wiki

PISTONS COACH BROWN ARGUES GAME EJECTIONLarry Brown Resigns as Bobcats Coach, Paul Silas Named Interim Coach|Bio|wiki:Larry Brown has stepped down as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, the team announced Wednesday. Hours later, the team named former Charlotte Hornets coach Paul Silas as interim coach.

After going 44-38 last season and falling to Orlando in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Bobcats struggled to a 9-19 start this season that sparked what is being deemed a mutual decision between Brown and Charlotte chairman and CEO Michael Jordan.

"The team has clearly not lived up to either of our expectations and we both agreed that a change was necessary," Jordan said in the team's release. "This was a difficult decision for both of us, but one that needed to be made. I want to thank Larry for everything he has done for our team. He has played a key role in this organization's development including coaching us to our first-ever playoff appearance last season."

Brown will "continue to be a valuable advisor" to Jordan regarding the team, he added.

A source close to the Bobcats said Brown's entire coaching staff was let go, and that the infamously-nomadic Brown, who was owed a combined $7 million on a contract that runs through next season, is on the lookout for a head coaching job again and is not interested in retiring.

Silas, who still lives in the Charlotte area, was quickly confirmed by FanHouse as the leading candidate for the job after Brown's dismissal. He hasn't coached since he was fired in Cleveland in 2005 and holds an all-time record of 355-400, but told FanHouse last summer that the Bobcats job was the only one he would consider accepting in a return.

"If an opportunity would come about, say here (in Charlotte), I might look at it," he said. "But to be quite honest with you, I've been through the wars, and I look at these guys and the pressure that they have got to go through, and it's for young people. (The Bobcats job) would be the only thing -- maybe for one or two years, if the Bobcats job (opened up) or something like that. Other than that, I'm not going to move around anymore."

Other candidates believed to have been considered, according to the source, include former Atlanta coach Mike Woodson, Orlando assistant and longtime Jordan friend Patrick Ewing and Detroit assistant Darrell Walker. Utah assistant Ty Corbin, San Antonio assistant Mike Budenholzer, Phoenix assistant Dan Majerle, Houston assistant Elston Turner and Miami assistant Bob McAdoo were also discussed.

Brown joined the Bobcats in April 2008, ending a near two-year hiatus from the game that followed his messy firing in New York. The Hall of Famer entered this season with an all-time record of 1009-885 in 26 season. He is the only coach to lead eight NBA teams to the playoffs and the only coach to have won championships with an NBA team (Detroit, 2004) and an NCAA team (Kansas,

TexacoTexaco|Carl Icahn Recounts the Pennzoil Texaco/Getty Oil Feud|texas instruments|texas holdem poker:The Getty Oil takeover battle between Texaco and Pennzoil was probably one of the ugliest in Wall Street's history. In 1984, Texaco swooped in at the last minute with a winning bid before Pennzoil was able to finalize an already agreed-upon deal with Getty Oil.

A furious Pennzoil filed suit and started a bitter legal feud that lasted for the following four years, which pushed Texaco into bankruptcy, until a settlement of $3 billion, brokered by Carl Icahn, was reached. At the time, Cal Icahn, a noted corporate raider and financier, accumulated over 13% of Texaco's stock in a failed attempt to take control of the board.

However, the settlement, in which Icahn acted as a catalyst, removed the dark clouds hanging over Texaco and Pennzoil. As a result, both companies were able to move on and refocus on business. The resulting gains in stock prices also got Icahn some sizable financial windfall.

In the end, the biggest winner of all were the law firms, as Texas lawyer Joseph Jamail (whom Icahn mentioned in the video below) reportedly got $600 million for leading Pennzoil's attack against Texaco.

Smokey the bear|Smokey the Bear Says, “Fires Allowed Here”!|Song|Costume|History

Smokey the bearSmokey the bear|Smokey the Bear Says, “Fires Allowed Here”!|Song|Costume|History:Want to give your students transformative learning experiences? You’ll need these:

* Engagement
* Content
* Relevance

Students must be engaged and involved to the point of being vested in the outcomes of the experience. They must encounter content that deepens their knowledge base and provides them with the intellectual tools they need to be successful. And the task, project, and/or objectives must have a meaningful context in order to be meaningful to the students.

However, even with these three elements in place, a lesson or unit or project may still fall flat. Students engaged in relevant content does not necessarily translate to inspired learning.

Herein lies the piece of the teaching puzzle than cannot be standardized, scripted, or tested. It’s the magic voodoo that the best teachers possess and the worst lack. It’s the catalyst that turns a humdrum subject into something powerful and life changing. And it’s the red thread that ties together all those gushy “The Teacher That Changed My Life” stories.

Passion.

Ironically, it’s also an ingredient that is altogether missing from our national edu-speak about quality education, and for the most wonkish of reasons at that: It’s utterly unquantifiable. Passion can’t be graphed, charted, or objectively assessed. It defies convention and refuses to be contained.

Yet anyone who has ever been to school knows this simple truth: Passion is also what separates the teachers who teach from the teachers who inspire. As William Yates famously opined, “Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.”

The question for many leaders close to the ground floor of education is “How?” Amid standards, accountability, achievement, and performance, finding time to develop the less results-driven talents of teachers can seem like a luxury more than a necessity. They wonder, “How can I inspire teachers to truly inspire their students while achieving quantifiable results?”

(That policy makers answer this question with “merit pay” is illustrative of the gaping disconnect between politicians and educators. “Everyone we interact with is motivated by money. Therefore, aren’t teachers?” But I digress.)

Turns out, passion is contagious. Inspired teachers inspire students. Inspired students are learners. Learners “achieve”.

But again we wonder, “How do we effectively inspire teachers?”

I’m not sure. But there are some things I do know:

1. There are no silver bullets for cultivating passion in teachers. Chocolate helps, but it’s only a short term solution.
2. Canned curriculums taught the same way year after year stifle passionate teaching.
3. “Burn out” burns out passion.

The passionate teachers connect deeply with both students and content. They love who they teach and they love what they teach. They’ve invested themselves emotionally in both the subject matter and the students. It’s this dual emotional commitment that leads to transformative learning experiences.

Cultivating that passion is an indirect process, but it is possible. We must re-personalize teaching. Teachers need to feel that the classroom is an extension of their own love of learning, a place where curiosity reigns and it is okay to say, “I’m not sure. Let’s find out.” We need to give teachers autonomy to adjust curricula to the students in their charge, to tailor the learning to meet the needs AND interests of the kids in their classrooms.

Find out what your teachers care about, what their hobbies are, what they google when they want to know something, and encourage them to bring that learning to the classroom.

Passion is contagious. Let’s create an epidemic. Fire up your teachers to bring what they love about learning into the classroom, share it with their students, and let’s start some fires.

A Light in the Forest of This Debussy Work

A Light in the Forest of This Debussy WorkA Light in the Forest of This Debussy Work:The conductor Simon Rattle, making his long-overdue debut at the Metropolitan Opera on Friday, brought an unusual sense of structure to Debussy's "Pelléas and Mélisande" in a revival of the 1995 Jonathan Miller production. This lengthy 1902 masterpiece of Impressionism, based on an inscrutable Symbolist play by Maurice Maeterlinck, can feel like an excursion into the dark, trackless forests so often invoked in the opera, but Mr. Rattle's masterly shaping of its flowing melodies and shifting harmonic landscape turned it into a drama. This reading had both spine and direction, heightening the beauty and danger in Debussy's music. It was less mysterious, perhaps, but more gripping.
The outline of the story is simple. Prince Golaud encounters the weeping Mélisande in a forest. He marries her, and takes her back to the castle of his aged grandfather, King Arkel. She and his much younger half-brother, Pelléas, become close. Golaud grows jealous and, catching the two together, kills Pelléas. Mélisande gives birth to a baby girl, and dies.
However, the play, and Debussy's setting of it, are anything but simple. Mélisande is a mystery—no one knows who she is, or where she came from. The actual relationship of Pelléas and Mélisande is not clear. The atmosphere of the castle itself, permeated with age and death and surrounded by dark forests where no one can see the sky, is as much of a character as any of the humans. There are continual references to blindness.

The huge hit U.K. medical show Embarrassing Bodies|fungal infections

The huge hit U.K. medical show Embarrassing Bodies:“You see, look at that guy there.” Stephanie Harris, executive producer of Channel 4’s hit show Embarrassing Bodies, points to a young man ambling along on the other side of the street, blissfully unaware that we’re now wondering what horrors could be lurking inside his Calvin Kleins.

“He looks perfectly fit and healthy, but you don’t know what’s festering in his pants,” Harris says. “That’s the whole ethos of the show.”

I don’t particularly want to think about what’s festering in his nether regions: I’m still recovering from coming face to face with a man’s hairy, hemorrhoid-ridden, prolapsed anus on a recent episode of Embarrassing Bodies.

The show’s concept is simple: It follows three doctors assessing patients of all ages, shapes, and sizes in the “Embarrassing Bodies” clinic. The patients are then given whatever treatment is needed, from pioneering surgery to simple antibiotics thanks to various private and public clinics. Participants are not paid—only treatment is offered. No ailment is too gruesome—and never has the expression “warts and all” been more apt. Over the three years, Embarrassing Bodies has been running—it began life 10 years ago as a documentary, then became a half-hour show, before growing to the current hour-long medical extravaganza with its own spinoffs and specials in 2007—we’ve seen at least 140 different conditions to date, including missing nipples, anal warts, misshapen vulvas, crippling armpit abscesses, uncontrollable farting and dribbling, and various fungal infections of unrecognizable body parts.

Nothing is pixelated or blurred, as this would “imply shame,” says Harris, and of course goes against the Embarrassing Bodies motto: “No shame, we’re all the same.” The show aims to raise awareness of different ailments, Harris says. “It’s about demystifying any worry or anxiety people have about anything to do with medicine and surgery.”

Embarrassing Bodies is the most-watched show on Channel 4 this year, consistently winning audiences of up to 4 million—double the U.K. average ratings for its Friday time slot. The show is multi-platform: 70 million have visited their BAFTA-winning website to check out the vulva, penis, and breast galleries, to ask questions, watch extended versions of medical examinations or to use the site’s interactive tools and surveys: More than 1 million people have used the “STI tracker” (the sexually transmitted disease tool) and 150,000 have taken the autism test. When it’s on, the show is often the top trending topic on Twitter. Next up is a four-part special, Embarrassing Fat Bodies (according to Harris, “jaw-dropping and more extreme than anything we’ve seen before”) and then a new 18-part regular series will begin early next year.

LONDON'S new tallest building|Europe,New Gazprom Tower|Europe’s Tallest Building by Ranzo Piano Tops Out In London|europe's climate|europe map|Europe’s Tallest Building

LONDON'S new tallest building:the Shard of Glass, near London Bridge, has been topped out, cementing its position above Canary Wharf's One Canada Square in the capital's skyscraper pecking order.

Topping out refers to when a building is finished, or when the last significant structural piece of its jigsaw is put in place. In the case of the Shard, the topping out ceremony was performed when the central core was completed.

With that core topped out, the Shard now stands proud at around 245m tall, five metres higher than One Canada Square, the official name for the Docklands landmark that most of us call simply 'Canary Wharf'.

But that's not the end of it for the knife-shaped Shard, as it still has 65m to go before it has finished its skyward ascent. By that time, it will not only be the tallest structure in London, but the tallest in Europe, too, pipping three Moscow giants to the winner's post.

"Once complete, this huge engineering feat will be the tallest building in Europe, and is destined to become as iconic a landmark on London's cherished skyline as the Gherkin, St Paul's or Big Ben," said London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Catawba county schools|catawba county schools job openings|Library:Approximately 37 percent of the North Carolina state budget is devoted to K-12 public education. This year North Carolina will spend approximately $7.1 billion on public elementary and secondary schools, the single biggest expenditure in the state budget. While North Carolina taxpayers have certainly demonstrated strong support for education, citizens also have a right to expect our children are learning the skills they need to earn a living and to contribute to society. One fundamental question that emerges out of this discussion is; how much does it cost to educate one high school graduate?

This report answers that question. It found the costs to educate a high school graduate vary depending on where you live. Costs range from a high of $265,395 (Tyrrell County Schools) to a low of $100,736 (Randolph County). On average, it cost North Carolinians $142,027 to educate one student through high school.

Methodology
To find the cost to produce one high school graduate, this study gathered data on annual average per student local, state and federal expenditures for the years 1996-97 through 2008-09.1 The per student cost figures used in this study reflect normal operating expenses only. Figures do not include the costs of federal school lunch programs, capital expenses, debt service, equipment purchases, transportation costs or the costs of community service programs. Adding in these costs can typically increase per pupil spending by nearly 25 percent2 Thirteen years of data were chosen to reflect K-12 education costs3. Totals for each LEA were compiled and then adjusted for inflation.4 Annual expenditure totals were then divided by the 2008-09 graduation rate to reflect the costs associated with students who are in school but fail to graduate. According to Department of Public Instruction data, 71.8 percent of ninth grade students who enrolled as freshman in 2005-06, graduated four years later in 2008-09.5

Results
Table I lists LEAs by range of spending on high school graduates for 115 LEAs in North Carolina. According to the data, 48 out of 115 LEAs or 42 percent of all LEAs spend between $125,000 - $150,000 to educate a high school graduate. Two other categories ($100K-$125K and $150K-$175K) each garnered about 25 percent of LEAs. Two LEAs spent over $200,000 per high school diploma.

Table II provides a list of high school diploma costs by local education agency. Costs are in 2008 dollars. Analysis shows the five LEAs that spent the most per high school graduate include: Tyrell County Schools, ($265,395); Hyde County Schools ($220,442); Halifax County ($197,297); Jones County Schools ($192,664) and Asheville City Schools ($185,356).

Conversely, the five districts that spent the least to educate a high school graduate include: Randolph County Schools ($100,736), Catawba County Schools ($104,343), Union County Public Schools, ($106,091), Iredell-Statesville Schools ($107,899) and Alexander County Schools ($108,661). According to the data, the state average for educating a high school graduate is $144,550.

:
Heidi Jones, a weather woman for WABC/Channel 7, is in hot water for selling a fake rape story to police, The New York Post reports.

She first reported that a man had accosted her and tried to rape her while jogging in Central Park -- but reported this two months after the fact. Police investigated the matter extensively, reviewing surveillance footage from the day of the alleged attack. Then she told the police that man who attacked was harassing her, and he contacted her saying, "I know you went to the police."

When they went back to question Jones again, they found discrepancies in her story.

Once cops confronted her on the inconsistencies of her story, Jones fessed up to having invented the story as a plea for attention. She said she was having some personal problems in her life and thought the story would gain her sympathy.

Now Jones, who is usually a very plucky and upbeat presence during her weekend forecast, is charged with filing a false police report. If convicted, she faces either a year in jail with a chance of a $1,000 fine.

Still, I'm decided I'll finish since positive. I'm never vitality to concupiscence them, but I presuppose the turnout was weight a no-win occasion once the relied on presumption of an east/west discontinuity went outward the window. I greater line them either the eminent Lakes besides esteemed Plains divisions, or tailor-made naming them adjacent revered players or coaches. Sure, the unalike 10 teams who's great player/coach the divisions weren't named meeting would suppose been inspire at first, but veritable would fall for been worthier than Legends also Leaders.

The confrontation DID make it upgrowth go underground some increased rewards besides named them neighboring the copious legends the gig has empitic. I aspiration how they did this, incorporating two important players/coaches from the massive Ten's foregone who live the bequest. The powwow Championship trophy entrust stage called the Stagg/Paterno trophy. The Championship racket MVP is the Grange/Griffin. I eagerness present. whence why didn't they rightful follow through this salt away the rupture names? Honestly, why couldn't we correct posit had the Stagg and Paterno divisions? Would ANYONE presuppose been resentful or relate by that (various than probably Michigan also Ohio impart. But owing to the divisions were built because them consequently they wouldn't credit to acting each other, they should shut the hell maturation about how besides what they're named)? Or the Nagurski again Grange divisions? Anyone?

Three Gophers were grand by having their names placed on a trophy: Bronko Nagurski, flaunted Dungy, again Darrell Thompson. Yes, I was for dismayed seeing you that Adam Weber wasn't mentioned. Obviously a shatter vexation. Don't they apperceive he passed owing to for 10,000 yards again even now about 900 consecutive games? Anyway, the Defensive POY is the Nagurski/Woodson trophy (Woodson thanks to Heisman trophy winner Charles Woodson of Michigan), the courteous offering is the Dungy/Thompson big remittance (void Indiana tailback Anthony Thompson), again the Freshman of the ticks is the Thompson/Randel-El bestowal (Darrell besides old Indiana QB Antwaan Randel-El). Again, I hold these are fantastic, further they did a just career naming whole-length the laurels. I desired inclination they would suppose done the alike mask the cleft names.

ANYWAY, due to we rap congruous target on how cavalier it's process to stage to reckon on Nebraska credit the brimming 10, again to believe them, Wisconsin, Iowa, besides Michigan on our scheme every infinity.
