SINGAPORE - The National Environmental Agency (NEA) will be stepping up hygiene enforcement efforts during the Thaipusam Festival.
In a statement released by the environmental body, it said it will step up hygiene checks along the stretch of road between Sri Srinvasa Perumal Temple at Serangoon Road, to Sri Thendayuthapani Temple at Tank Road, where Thaipusam celebrations will take place.
There will also be extra refuse bins and which will be cleared hourly. In addition, more cleaners will be deployed in the vicinity of the temples.
Store owners and occupiers of properties along the affected areas are advised to keep their areas clean. Banners and announcements by temple officials will also serve to remind the public on keeping their surroundings clean.
First-time offenders who throw minor litter can be fined up to $300. Repeat offenders and those who throw major litter can be fined up to $1,000, and/or imposed with a Corrective Work Order of up to 12 hours.
Illegal hawkers can be fined up to $1,000 for first-time offenders. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $4,000, and/or imprisoned up to three months. Members of the public are advised not to purchase items from illegal hawkers.
